Is the Church asleep?

Written by April Gaddis

Wow - this feels like a long time coming. Even though we just started working on this album recently, I feel like “Seasons” encompasses not just the last 4 years for us but pretty much my entire life.

The Lord began speaking to me on Seasons in early 2018. “For everything there is a season.” He opened my eyes to see that by stating for “everything” there is a season, that means that you can actually have seasons inside of seasons. Also, He showed me the importance of knowing what season you are in. I found it very difficult walking into a new season, when I didn’t know what season I was going into or coming out of.

I still believe that we can never truly know all the time; that is part of trusting the Holy Spirit to guide us and know that His every intention is good. The kicker I have found, though, is that you have to always be asking - ask the Holy Spirit what He is teaching you, what He is helping you work out in your heart. This has definitely made the transition process not necessarily easier, but it has made me more confident in the process. Especially when the answer He gives is simply “trust me.”

Seasons originally started from a spontaneous worship moment Zach and I had. We were just worshipping the Lord, and then I felt the Holy Spirit tell me that “The time for Awakening is coming.” Any time we hear a word from the Holy Spirit, we go to scripture to find the accuracy of what we feel was heard. The scripture that kept standing out to me was Acts 2:17. “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old me will dream dreams.” Also, in 1 Corinthians 15:20, it says, “But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.”

Christ died and rose again so that our spirits would be resurrected. With this statement I felt like the Holy Spirit was telling me that the whole world was in a state of being asleep. This included the church.

There has been this drought - this quenching of truth. Truth of who Jesus really is and truth of the true Gospel.

I felt He was directing me back to The scripture that talks about people thinking they are Christians going to Heaven, but then He will say to them, “Depart from me, for I never knew you.” (Matthew 7:23

When I read through scripture, it seems to be this constant cycle of God’s people messing everything up, and Him coming to set things straight again. I believe that this is what the Holy Spirit was saying - that awakening meant God would come to wake us up and set things straight. Now, since scripture portrays that the next awakening will be the second coming, then I am inclined to think that is what it means. However, I am not a Theologian, so I would never make such a claim, but what I do know is, that the Holy Spirit told us to write about this.. so we did.

In the beginning, we thought this album would be called Awakening. As we started to write, it evolved into Seasons. God was showing us the necessity of time - the necessity for all things to complete its season that was designed for it, because if it doesn’t, it will die prematurely. It was as if The Lord was saying, you need to write about what comes before and after the Awakening.
